How Do I Teach My Child To Pray?
“Dear Jesus, Thank you for my cousin and having sleepovers, and these really cool sleeping bags! Dinner was really good too, and s’mores. I’m sorry when I was naughty, especially playing around the fire, but thanks for not letting me fall in! God bless Auntie Mary, and help her remember pancakes in the morning, OR MUFFINS! Blueberry. Amen.”
This was my daughters prayer with her cousin the other night, and what an awesome prayer! Thanksgiving, repentance, interceding on behalf of others and petitions for things she wants. How does a 4 year old pray such a well rounded prayer? It’s because she has modeled her prayer off of examples she has heard over and over again since she was a baby. From us, her parents, her Sunday school teachers, preschool teachers, and pastors. We teach our children how to pray simply by praying around, and with them.
Simply by watching and listening others pray, our little girl has learned how to address her Lord and Savior, speak to him boldly and confidently, and converse with him as if speaking to a friend.
As parents, by making our prayer lives a priority we teach our children to do the same. When we pray out loud our young children learn how to structure a prayer. This way they are able to pray a variety of types of prayers for all occasions. May God bless us and our children as we strive to give them constant examples of how Christian prayer looks.
